On the night of 2 August 1944, the last 4,300 Sinti and Roma imprisoned at Auschwitz-Birkenau were murdered. Their deaths became a symbol of a genocide that claimed the lives of an estimated 500,000 Roma and Sinti across Europe. For decades, this history was overlooked. Recognition came because survivors, activists, and communities fought to ensure the Roma Holocaust would not be forgotten.Today, remembering is more important than ever.
Antigypsyism has not disappeared. It continues to shape lives through discrimination, hate speech, exclusion, and violence. August 2 reminds us that prejudice, when left unchallenged, has devastating consequences.
